“Stone”, “Phantom”, & “Siamese”

by Sarah Hildebrand

“Stone”

You would come to my room, day after day.

everything stood still when you were there,

and nothing ever changed.

until one day you walked in, and something was off.

a small beast looked up at you,

its ivory-white teeth searching their way closer.

but even as it hooted and snuffed,

Your eyes stayed locked on mine.

You continued to come by every day,

and the gray, wrinkled creature never left.

it kept growing each day,

till there was near no more standing room.

one day you opened the door,

and for the first time, your eyes left mine.

You looked up to meet the brute,

a sigh leaving your mouth.

without another word, you left.

and you never came back.

“Phantom”

You told me you wanted a cake,

and I loved you so I baked made it.

You told me you wanted every flavor there was,

and I loved you so I mixed them.

You told me you wanted infinite layers,

and I loved you so I started to stack.

You told me you wanted sprinkles on top,

and I loved you so I poured them on.

You told me you wanted to eat your cake,

and I loved you, but not enough to let you have it.

“Siamese”

You took me to your closet,

and invited me inside.

You showed me all the skeletons,

You felt you had to hide.

I went to grab a bone,

You smacked it far away.

You wanted me to see it,

but never show it day.

You told me I was special,

not many got to see.

but then you never bothered

to come and visit me.

I wanted to show you

inside my closet too.

but you just kept filling yours,

too embarrassed of the truth.
